Cynosure-laser Buying Checklist: Vectus, Service, and Supplies

I'm the office administrator who gets asked to "look into a laser." It happened three times in 2024 alone. Our clinical team wanted a Cynosure Vectus diode laser for hair-reduction procedures; our prototyping crew wanted a machine that could cut foam for laser cutting and turn out laser engraved designs; and, at the same time, my boss wanted to know about Candela vs Cynosure laser comparison before we even scheduled a demo. So I made a checklist. This is it.

This is not a clinical guide. I'm not a clinician and I won't pretend to be one. My experience comes from managing procurement for a mid-sized med-spa group and a small fabrication shop: roughly $2M in annual spend across 30+ vendors, about 60 orders a year. I've only bought and serviced laser systems in the U.S., so if you're outside the U.S., some compliance steps won't apply. Use this as a starting point, not as legal advice.

The 5-step procurement checklist

It's a practical list. Do the steps in order. Five steps, and step three is the one most people skip.

Step 1: Write down the actual workflow

Before you search 'cynosure-laser' or compare models, get the workflow in writing. What will the laser be used for on a typical Tuesday?

  • Clinical: e.g., hair reduction, vascular lesions, tattoo removal
  • Industrial: e.g., cutting closed-cell foam for laser cutting, marking parts, creating laser engraved designs on acrylic or wood
  • R&D: e.g., femtosecond fiber laser for micromachining samples

Why does this matter? Because the right laser is the one your team can keep running. If your team can't articulate the workflow, every conversation with a vendor becomes a sales pitch.

I've been through it. You end up comparing brochure specs when the real questions are about wavelength, pulse duration, spot size, and service support.

For clinical systems, the Cynosure Vectus diode laser is a diode-based platform. It's not a replacement for a Q-switched or picosecond laser. For a med-spa, the comparison should be: does this diode system fit our protocols, our staff training, and our facility's power/cooling? In my experience, most systems are capable; the deciding factor is whether the manufacturer's support covers your geography and your staff's experience.

For industrial work, the same logic applies. A femtosecond fiber laser has an ultra-short pulse width that makes it great for precision cutting and engraving. A CO2 laser might be a better fit if you're cutting thicker foam for laser cutting. Compare the material stack-up and throughput, not just wattage. (And remember: laser engraved designs depend on optics and software just as much as power.)

Step 3: Verify service and parts before you sign

Here's where I made my biggest mistake. I assumed 'authorized service' meant a technician within driving distance. Didn't verify. Turned out the closest authorized tech for one system was 600 miles away, with a three-week backlog. We had a $180,000 laser sitting dark. That was not fun.

Before you sign anything, ask:

  • Who performs repairs? Manufacturer or third-party? Is the repair shop actually certified for this specific Cynosure model?
  • Where are spare parts stocked? What's the average ship time for a diode module, a handpiece, or a fiber-length replacement?
  • Does the warranty cover parts and labor, or parts only? Labor is where the invoice jumps.
  • Is there a training plan for your staff? A laser is only as good as the operator.

The laser might be a reliable fiber source, but the motion system, exhaust, and even the foam material itself affect the part. Step 4: Check facility requirements, safety, and compliance

I have mixed feelings about this step because it sounds like a lecture but it's the one that saves you from a terrible surprise. I once skipped a site inspection for a used system. The unit needed a 3-phase connection and we didn't have it. The demo was free; the electrical work wasn't. (Ugh.)

At minimum, before ordering a Cynosure laser or any medical laser, get written answers to these:

  • Electrical: voltage, phase, current draw, and whether a dedicated circuit is needed.
  • Cooling: does the system need facility chilled water or just room-temperature air? Some systems have internal chillers; some don't.
  • Ventilation: especially for cutting foam for laser cutting; fumes are not optional to manage.
  • Safety: ANSI Z136.1 is the U.S. standard for laser safety. In a clinical setting you'll also need a laser safety officer (LSO) and documented eye protection.
  • Regulatory: For medical devices, check the FDA 510(k) database for the intended use. I compared several Cynosure entries in February 2025; verify current listings before you buy.

Step 5: Budget for the boring stuff

The purchase price is not the price. I should know: we once got a 'great deal' on a service because we bought the system at list. The service contract excluded consumables, and the consumables were the real cost.

Build a 12-month budget line for:

  • Preventive maintenance visits (calibration, laser energy checks, optics cleaning)
  • Consumables like handpieces, fibers, tips, and protective windows
  • Operator training and retraining
  • Software updates or password renewals
  • Downtime buffer, in case a repair takes longer than the vendor promised

On that note, I have mixed feelings about prepaid service contracts. On one hand, they feel like an expensive insurance policy. On the other hand, the one time we skipped the contract, we spent more in emergency repairs and lost revenue than three years of the contract would have cost. So now I include the service contract in the capex decision. At least, that's been my experience with mid-sized clinical and fab operations. If you have an in-house optics engineer, your math might be different.

Three mistakes I made so you don't have to

Not a perfect list. Just the ones that hurt.

  1. I believed the 'full-service' line. The contract included labor, but when the diode module failed, the module itself wasn't covered. The repair cost almost as much as a service contract. Ask the question directly: 'What's not included?'
